Hey guys. It’s Tamara here. You may not know this, but I am the person behind Lil Helper’s instagram account.
I recently asked our followers what their favourite thing about cloth diapering was and I got some really great responses. If you have been looking for reasons why people cloth diaper, look no further!
Here are the top 9 reasons to choose cloth diapers today.
9. Cloth diapers are just so darn cute!
You cannot talk about the reasons why people cloth diaper without mentioning that it’s ADORABLE.
From the absolutely precious prints, to look of a puffy, round, fabulous fluff-butt, all cloth diapering parents will agree; cloth is THE CUTEST!
It’s no secret that disposable diapers do a really good job of absorbing fluid.
In fact, they do SUCH a good job of it that often times children don’t even realize that they are wet. The absence of a wet feeling can make potty training more difficult as toddlers will comfortably wear that wet diaper for hours and hours.
When it comes to potty training, a bit of dampness communicates to the child that they have gone pee, and any associated discomfort helps send the message they should give that potty a try.
Cloth diapers, by nature, are more ‘damp feeling’ to a child than disposables and thus many children are more keen to transition out of them and onto a potty sooner. The downside here is that your child will be out of their adorable cloth diapers sooner than you might be emotionally ready for.
7. Cloth Diapering has an amazing community both on and offline.
The internet and social media are packed FULL of communities of cloth diapering parents. It is a wonderful way to meet and share information with like-minded people.
Plus! Have you ever been at a family-friendly event or play space and had someone notice that your child was wearing cloth diapers? INSTA-BONDING!
One of the reasons why people cloth diaper is for that sense of community and connection with other cloth diapering parents & caregivers.
6. Cloth diapers are better for developing hips.
It is widely said that the extra bulk in cloth diapers can help support a young baby’s developing hips.
If you have concerns about your child’s hips and are wondering how cloth diapers might help, definitely have a chat with your pediatrician.
5. Cloth diapering means never having to worry about running out of diapers.
As long as you have enough diapers in your stash to last between wash days, you will never need to worry about running out of diapers, or stressing about how you will afford the next box.
4. Cloth diapers have fewer poo-splosions.
Once you find the perfect fit, cloth diapers contain those gnarly poo-splosions much better than disposables.
I had my own son in disposable diapers for his first 3 months of life. In that time we dealt with a least a dozen explosions and ruined a number of very cute outfits. I am not exaggerating when I say that we have not had a single poo-explosion since switching to cloth and finding the perfect fit.
3. Cloth diapers are better for baby’s delicate skin, leading to fewer diaper rashes.
Babies with particularly sensitive, reactive skin tend to do better in cloth diapers. Cloth diapers “breathe” more than disposables, and do not contain the same harmful chemical ingredients.
2. Cloth diapering saves money.
Most cloth diapering families report an initial investment of $300-$500 to get started with cloth diapering. This one-time investment will last the duration of your child’s diapering years, as well as last for any future children.
Disposable diapers, however, will cost $2000+ *per year* and most children are in diapers for at least two years, sometimes three. That’s $4000-$6000 per child that will eventually end up in a landfill! What a waste!
1. Cloth diapering is better for the environment.
Our children will inherit our landfills. At Lil Helper we believe that our generation must do everything we can reasonably do to make sure that the earth that we leave to our children is bountiful, safe, and clean.
Every time a disposable diaper is thrown away, it faces a future of sitting in a landfill (or in our oceans) for hundreds of years. However, cloth diapers, once manufactured, can be reused over and over again making them a much more earth-friendly choice. It’s no wonder why this is the top reason why people cloth diaper.
